Description:
Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, with arms outstretched, is always blessing all those below him. The Cristo Redentor statue is visible virtually anywhere in the city. The statue's pedestal is the 2310-foot mountain, Corcovado. The contemporary Christ figure on top rises another 100 feet, its arms extending nearly 92 feet from fingertip to fingertip. The soapstone and concrete construction weighs app. 700 tons. French sculptor Paul Landowski and a team of artisans erected the statue to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of Brazilian independence from Portugal in1822. Due to budget issues, the centennial artwork wasn't finished until 1931, after help from the Vatican. The sleek and impressive Cristo Redentor statue was voted as one of the New Wonders Of The World in 2007.
